Mission Statement

To research, design and administer community development programs to improve the quality of urban life for and with community residents. The goals of the agency are to serve as advocate for residents through community organization efforts and to assist families and individuals in understanding their rights.

Services

Employment: The objective of the employment program is to explore employment opportunities for the unemployed and under-employed youths within the community to upgrade their skills through referrals to training programs with which links have been established. This is achieved through the conduct of seminars on resume preparation, interviewing skills, job search techniques, attitudinal training, and how to access local, federal and private resources. Housing: The objectives of the housing program are to gather, analyze, and disseminate information regarding housing that is of importance to the community, assist in understanding and resolving specific housing dilemmas, utilizing negotiation techniques and forming and participating in coalition housing groups. Since 1997, the Agency has participated in the Federal Emergency Management Agency Homeless Prevention Program. Contact: Mary Adams (202) 789-0868

Education: The primary objective of the education program is to maintain linkages with private and public institutions and programs with the view to assisting students achieve academic success. The program covers sponsorship of workshops focused on consumer education, health education, tax preparation, and voter education. A tutorial program caters to those youths who require assistance with their lessons. Volunteer tutors are matched with students who need help. Contact: Alverta Munlyn (202) 789-0866

Crisis Intervention: The main objective here is to assist the needy in the time of crisis. The program focuses on the solicitation, collection and distribution of food and clothing to needy clients during an emergency. Contact: Bonnie Burnett (202) 789-0446

Youth Development: The program facilitates the cultivation of youths within the community into a cadre of well-trained individuals through cultural exposure, physical education and athletics activities, drug and crime prevention, and personal hygiene. A Youth Summer Job Placement Program has been in operation for over 20 years. The program also offers youth on-the-job training to promote self-sufficiency. Contact: Alverta Munlyn (202) 789-0866
